The point of this blog?
Well, I've decided to stand for election as National President of AUS. The election is a few months away so I thought I'd put myself out there so members could check me out and see if I'm the kind of person they want to lead the union into this important period of its development.
Equally importantly, the blog gives me the opportunity to hear your views as well; about the course you'd like the AUS to be steering, the issues at your campus, the challenges facing the university sector, broader social issues or any other matters of relevance to your union.
I'm kicking off the blog with a bit about me and my background. And I'll also explain why I want to be AUS President and why I think I'd do a good job in the role.
Vote now for David Small as the next National President of the Association of University Staff (AUS). I have maintained this forum for information and dialogue since June when I first announced my intention to stand for this position. Polling closes on Friday 19 October.

My Supporters
Both candidates for AUS National President are from Canterbury. The opinions of Canterbury members are based on observing and/or working with both candidates over many years.
Here is a selection of quotes from active AUS members from Canterbury who support my candidacy.
David is inspirational, outspoken, fair and fearless. He is an outstanding leader who has contributed toward creating a culture of self-determination and collegiality in an environment of increasing disenfranchisement of university staff. With his commitment, vision and experience, David would make an extraordinary president.
Aditya Malik, Academic Rep, Canterbury Branch.
David fronts up and has a valid opinion on the key issues as well as the ability and experience to work with and influence the people that matter.
Sue Jackman, Treasurer, AUS Canterbury Branch.
David deeply understands and passionately embraces the original, defining values of the academy. He possesses a keen insight into the forces underlying unwanted and counterproductive change. David's voice on all matters of concern to the AUS is strong and fearless.
Philip Catton, Academic Member, Philosophy Department.
I endorse David as the candidate best suited to advance the interests of the AUS as a union and to play a progressive role on the national stage.
Taffy Davies, Former Vice-President, Canterbury Branch.
David is feisty, energetic, has a quick grasp of issues and is not afraid to speak out. He has spoken out about PBRF, academic freedom and university managerialism. He can speak equally well to his colleagues, the student body, the VC, the media and to MPs.
Emma de Lacey, Co-Vice-President. Canterbury Branch.
